PAX Australia Day 2, hands on with Oculus Rift
VR Insanity and Oculus Rift
VR Insanity are an Australian crew aiming to bring VR entertainment down under (initial plans are to set up somewhere near the Melbourne CBD), and were featuring four Oculus Rift Team Fortress 2 game stations for people at the show to try. Live got into the action, and can report that while the resolution was noticeably on the low side, it still felt much more immersive, and that the Rift unit itself was comfortable and easy to wear. Team Fortress 2 is the best working game with the Rift so far, which isn’t surprising given that Valve got it up and running on the hardware early, and has had a bit of time to polish, but other titles that VR Insanity will be supporting on the Rift include Mirror’s Edge and Skyrim. VR Insanity are also hoping to put together some set-ups using a 360 degree treadmill with the Oculus Rift, which would mean some incredibly immersive (not to mention fitness-friendly) gaming!
The good news was that reports of motion sickness were limited, and if it was experienced at all it generally wears off after a while. VR Insanity report that prolonged use tends to acclimatise the mind to it, making it even less of an issue over time.
More Aussie Indies
Canvas Interactive are a new Australian indie studio and were at the show promoting their debut title, the innovative Painters Unite, coming to PC and then hopefully Xbox and PSN down the track. We’ll have more details on it later, but for the moment, here’s a shot of the booth.
More pics from show floor
This is some seriously impressive cosplay. That, or the Geth have arrived, run for your lives!
More quality cosplay, and no arrows to the knee in sight. Should we call that Iron-Link outfit cross-cosplay?
You could even get your photo taken with women in uniform. Do it for the Skyhooks.
Astro letting their wares please the ears. Astro held a Black Ops 2 free for all tourney at their booth, with the winner carrying away a Care Package edition of the game (a slightly odd prize, as you’d think anyone winning a Black Ops 2 competition may have the game already….)
One more day to go!
There’s only one more day of PAX left, after which we’ll bring you more in-depth wrap ups. See you then :).
