PlayStation 3 Games You Should Not Miss

PS3

With the transition from last-gen's PlayStation 3 to the now current-gen PlayStation 4 heavily underway, Good Game ANZ lists their top seven picks for must-play PlayStation 3 exclusives that everyone should get into while it's still hot.

From the humble beginnings of the Xbox 360 (2006) and PlayStayion 3 (2007), the seventh Generation of console gaming brought some of the biggest and most ground-breaking, memorable experiences to date all across the gaming world. As we look back on some of the top console exclusives and multi-platform titles in a series of upcoming articles, today we will be begin by reflecting on seven of the greatest exclusive, must-play titles that best define the innovative success of the PlayStation 3.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

Released: June 2008

Developer: Kojima Productions

Publisher: Konami

Genre: Action/Stealth

Metal Gear Solid 4 was the first proper 'must-play' game for the Playstation 3, and towards the end of the consoles life, it stands out as one of the best stealth/action experiences available. The game revolves around stealth/action, and while it provides a bit more scope for the action side of things than past MGS titles (with better controls for action sequences than previous titles in the series), it's still at its best when stealthing past checkpoints and knocking guards unconscious, something it still does as well as any series in the genre. Combine this with an involved (if convoluted!) story and some creative bosses, and you've got another masterpiece from Hideo Kojima's team.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

Released: October 2009

Developer: Naughty Dog

Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment

Genre: Action/Adventure

One of the games of the generation, Uncharted 2 is not to be missed. Unless you are allergic to third-person shooters you owe it to yourself to play it, if you haven't already. Bringing Naughty Dog's high standards to every aspect of the game, with gameplay, story, characters and graphics all held to an exceptionally high standard. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is the complete package.

Heavy Rain

Released: February 2010

Developer: Quantic Dream

Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment

Genre: Action

Heavy Rain was criticised at times for not being a game, but while it is unlike the usual shooters, racers, RPGs and sports games that form the bulk of most gamers' playtime, there was no denying the brilliance (or nature as a game, if you thought about it) of Quantic Dream's dramatic masterpiece. If anyone in November 2005 had said that a game relying entirely on QTEs and the odd choice would be a game of the generation then they'd have been laughed at, but Heavy Rain is well worth a look for every gamer interested in emotional drama.

Demon's Souls

Released: June 2010 (AU)

Developer: Atlus

Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment

Genre: Action-RPG

Ask yourself: Do you want to die? Then ask you self that question some more. If the answer is still 'yes' then Demon's Souls is right for you. Demon's Souls is a challenging RPG where you will most definitely die as dying is as much apart of the game as living. Being able to adapt on the fly, know when to retreat and learn from your death and mistakes are all required skills to keep the death count low. Paving the way to success for its spiritual successor, Dark Souls, Demon's Souls is perhaps even more gruelling at times because the amount of deaths you accumulate can silently affect many of the secrets and rewards unveiled to you across this this punishing world. So if you are looking for something that doesn't hold your hand and provides a satisfying challenge for your skills and wits, then you must give Demon's Souls a go.

LittleBigPlanet 2

Released: January 2011

Developer: Media Molecule

Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment

Genre: Platformer

LittleBigPlanet 2 lets your inner child run free. Ever wanted to create a game level or even a mini-game? Then LittleBigPlanet 2 is one not to miss, letting you unleash you inner creativity on to the world or explore someone else's with just as much platforming fun.

Journey

Released: March 2012

Developer: ThatGameCompany

Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment

Genre: Adventure/Platformer

Looking for something different? Journey will give you an experience few others games can. ThatGameCompany perfects the peaceful, easy-going feeling that they excel at from their past and celebrated collection of games including flOw and Flower. Journey is a short but memorable experience; it is a slow, relaxing adventure and a different change of pace to most other games that lets you explore a wondrous and beautiful world. This is one of those games where every now and again, you can just stop and sit back to admire the gorgeous landscape unfolding before you.

The Last of Us

Released: June 2013

Developer: Naughty Dog

Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment

Genre: Action/Adventure

It's only arguably the best action/adventure game ever made! Combining a rock-solid world, brilliantly written and acted story, and nail-biting stealth and action/survival gameplay, the Last of Us sets a new high watermark in gaming. Throw in some original and entertaining multiplayer (that's still active as of writing, but a little rough for new players) and it's easy to see why it received it's many game of the year awards. If you've any interest in action/adventure/survival, or post-apocalyptic (in this case, zombie outbreak) settings, missing this game isn't an option.

Tell us what you think

Those are only handful of some of the best PlayStation 3 exclusives that we here at GoodGame believe everyone should definitely not miss out on. Do they sit on your Must-Play list too? What other games would you include?

I am shocked, nay outraged that a certain game released in 2009 did not receive honourable mention here! This was the game that introduced myself, and I am certain many others to the wonder of online gaming. This game also introduced myself and once again I believe others to a whole new dimention of hatred towards online gaming from significant others. If you have not yet guessed which game I refer to in all it's gloriousness, then you are removed from my friends list - Killzone 2! P.S Axe I do not hate you for you oversight in this matter, you were obviousley not feeling yourself, however, please ensure that this never occurs again.

Hahaha, don't worry Doomy, this was a compiled staff list, rather than my own personal PS3 exclusives, and was also targeted at games people could play and enjoy now.  Unfortunately great games like KZ2, SOCOM and MAG (and even GT5) have been/will shortly be hit by server closures and similar, so while they were _awesome_ times back in 2009, it's unlikely someone jumping onto those games now would have the same experience.  Don't get me wrong, KZ2 is awesome (sorry I've been away from KZ:SF for so long, been crook, but right keen to get back into it, hope I'm not too far off :D).

Resistance 1&2 should be on this list  just for the great campaign story the MP was also rather good shame 3 was a let down :(
I would like to mentioned Starhawk.  It got me into mp gaming world. Without it I wouldn't be here :D It is still going.. Going to play it on Manday as Retro night!
Aye, one of the things that struck us when putting the list together was just how many quality exclusives the PS3 had.  I'm a big Ratchet and Clank fan, and all three of the 'standard' R&C games on PS3 were great.  I just finished Resistance 3, and while it wasn't quite as striking as 1 or 2 (which were both also great), it was still a better campaign experience than any CoD since Modern Warfare.  Warhawk and Starhawk were also brilliant - have a great time on Monday Ati :D.
